The city of Commercy
The city of Commercy is the cradle of the madeleine invented in the cookings of the castle of King Stanislas in the XVIIIth century. Commercy was the city of the " royal Pleasures " of Stanislas who liked coming for the hunting there and to receive his guests there. The city kept testimonies of this time: castle, prieuré, bailliage, hospital. This architectural heritage grew rich with buildings of style "Art nouveau" at the beginning of the XXth century. We can also visit there the museum of the ceramic and the ivories, the second collection deFrance.

History of Commercy

In the Middle Ages, locked into its ramparts, Commercy develops around the fortress of his "gallants". The city, shared between two seigneuries, enjoys a particular legal status conferring him a quasi-independence between the kingdom of France, and the duchies of Bar and Lorraine.
With two Lords, Commercy had two castles. The Low castle totally disappeared today.
Other fortress, high castle, last time besieged by Vauban in 1653, is transformed by the cardinal of Retz who makes it his residence. It is to the prince of Vaudémont that we owe the current castle. In 1708, he acquires the principality of Commercy and reconstructs the castle. Nevertheless, the History will hold only Stanislas's name which took up Commercy in 1745 and made some castle a "delight" for his visitors.
